Mist Eliminators/Demister Pads in the Process Industry - How to Choose the Best?

In many processes followed by the industry, where gases and liquids make close contact with each other, the gas entrains some liquid along with it in the form droplets. This is simply undesirable and unwanted so that it can often leads to process disturbance, inefficiencies and product loss in operations like evaporators, distillation columns, knockout drums etc. The device is being used for removal of such entrained droplets form gases is referred to as a mist eliminator or Demister Pad. These Devices categorised in various types as per their use in particular application. Such variety of types, designing parameters and some important factors should be considered before deciding the best option to remove liquid droplets more efficiently from a mist gaseous stream.

Suitability and Droplet Sizes

Whenever the gas stream lifts the liquid droplets, the entrained liquid droplets sizes can be varying as per the driving force which is applied and it follows fluid theory. When droplets size will be less than 3 microns, it’ll be termed as fog. When it’ll be equal to 3 microns or greater, then it’ll be referred as mist. And when it crosses the 20-micron size, it can be called as a spray.

When droplet particles are in the mist region then the wire knitted mesh demister is the most suitable, whereas for particles are around the size of 20 micrometres or greater then the vane type mist eliminator devices are the mostly preferred.

 Demister Pad Mechanism -

Contact between gas and liquid in the column, it means maximum chances of entrainment. And it can lead to serious losses of the Process fluid and equipment damage in mass transfer operations.

The main working principle of Demister is to separate liquid by coalescing smaller liquid droplets from the gasses and allow it to get drop into the liquid pool. When mist in the gas rises at constant speed, then the mist eliminator works where, vapour strikes the mesh surface filament and liquid start coalescing. After some time, liquid droplet size goes up and it get sisolated from the filament.

Coalescing of smaller liquid droplets is due to different types obstructions made in the path of vapours. It allows vapours to pass through obstruction where the pressure drops created in the vapour leads to formation of liquid droplet, and only gasses to flow from the demister device by the mechanical separation.

Mist Eliminator Selection Guide

Perfect engineering will always land at accuracy. As the efficiency of the device is depending on various factors like droplet size, pressure drop, liquid handling capability of the separator and density of device etc. needs to be considered before selecting any category of device. One can select from many classes of such mist eliminators which are specifically designed to remove entrained liquid droplets from a gas stream.

S-Cube-Mist Eliminator Manufacturer

1.       Mesh pad Demister

The mesh pad demister removes droplets by impingement on the surface of a wire. This is the perfect choice for mist and fog. The liquid collector on the filament is drained off under gravity. These mist eliminators provide almost complete removal of droplets in specifically 3 to 5-micron range.

1.       Plain Vane Pack

The plain vane pack mist eliminator is a high efficiency demister commonly used for removing entrained liquids from vapour flowing vertically upwards. These demisters use corrugated vanes as a mechanism for mist elimination.

1.       Pocketed Vane Pack

The high capacity vane pack mist eliminator uses a hooked vane mechanism for high capacity mist elimination. They are particularly useful for applications involving a high degree of fouling.

Why to choose S-Cube’s Mist Eliminator/Demister Pads-

1.       Easy Installation and setup

A perfectly designed and fitted demister pad will be easy to install, and results into minimal downtime. Demister Pads are uniquely engineered and assembled for particular application as per the client’s requirement. A well-engineered pad will be highly efficient resulting in low pressure drop and fouling. The Manufacturing materials of the pads are able to withstand at elevated temperature and having corrosion resistance property. This allows it for long lasting, minimum cost and higher production in the plant operations.

2.       Efficiently Eliminates the Mist

Demister pads are extremely effective when it comes to removal of entrained liquid droplets from contaminated vapours with liquid droplets. Mist eliminator can remove nearly 100% of solvent losses or emissions if the device is properly installed, efficiently designed and constructed of durable materials.

3.       Shapes and Sizes

Mist eliminators can be designed in all sizes and shapes for vertical or horizontal flow as per process requirement. They can be designed to fit over any sized equipment to create the disturbances in the path of toxic gasses in the outlet system.
