How To Select Various Types Of Separation Internals?

Separators are utilized to Oil Water Separation from the liquid in a well stream. This allows liquid free gas to be diverted to gas sales and/or to be utilized as fuel. Relatively gas free oil is then dumped to storage or to a treating system for removal of water.

Vertical separators are designed primarily for intermediate gas-oil ratios, while horizontal separators are suited for high gas-oil ratios and constant flow well-streams. These high-pressure separators are available in vertical or horizontal configurations, with a wide range of sizes and capacities.

S-Cube Mass Transfer Pvt. Ltd. is specializing in filling the needs of the petroleum industry, with products designed to withstand the rigors of oil and gas production. We understand that the ability to separate oil, gas, and water in oilfield operations is critical; that’s why we provide a wide range of robustly engineered 2 and 3 phase separators.

Two Phase Separators:

Two Phase Separators are designed specifically for oil and gas. The well stream enters the separator and strikes an inlet deflector which diverts the liquid and gas downstream to the liquid section where it begins to separate. After adequate retention time, liquid builds up in the bottom of the tank and lifts a float, through a linkage to dump the fluid.

Three Phase Separators:

Three Phase Separators are designed specifically for oil, gas and water. Essentially the same as a two phase except the separator has an internal inlet down comer, which carries the fluid to the bottom of the vessel for added retention and separation time.

Selection and Use of the different separator internals/Parts of Separators-

There are various types of separator internals which are being used in the process. Proper selection of internals will give proper outcome results.

1.      Vane Inlet device

This device is mostly used in a medium to high inlet momentum process conditions. The inlet stream entering through the inlet nozzles gets distributed/divided into a number of equal streams each of which is deflected through 90 to create a centrifugal gas/ liquid separation effect. The streams then impinge directly against the vessel of the walls and enter the bulk fluid phases to absorb the momentum.

2.      Mist Eliminator/ Demister pad

When solids are present in the gas then demister pad can’t be a choice. Selection of Vane type mist eliminator will be the perfect option. Further selection is depending upon pressure drop, efficiency of the device. We are designing each device with well customized and specialized software for getting optimized efficiency and pressure drop calculation for particular applications.

Specially, these devices are the perfect choice for Scrubbing systems, Absorbers, Evaporators, Knockout and steam drums etc. in the process.

3.      Baffle

This device mostly used to distribute the liquid flow. After the inlet device, the liquid passes through distribution baffles which may be single or a matched pair of transverse perforated baffle plates in the liquid zone where fluid gets properly distributed. Their primary function is to provide a barrier in the fluid way and distribute the liquid evenly from the turbulent inlet zone to the calm separation zone.

4.      Vane Pack

This is also a part of the liquid-liquid coalescers and it’s used in special condition where the Solid particles present in the process fluid. Mainly used for viscous, suspended solid or large droplet size vapours. This device provides high efficiency at low pressure drop.

5.      Plate Pack

Gravity based separation of oil and water is accomplished by droplets settling in the plate pack. A certain amount of retention time is necessary to allow the droplets to get settled and be united to its bulk phase. Plate pack coalescers are used in the liquid section of a separator or scrubber to optimize the degree of liquid-liquid separation. These coalescers provide excellent performance especially in applications of fouling cases.

6.      Coalescer Packings

The packing is manufactured in corrugated sheets making it strong, durable and well suited for the particular application. Liquid droplets gets directly impinge on the irregular surface of the packing which allowing coalescence to take place. The larger droplets then flow mostly down through the packing and separate out into their respective phase.

Another type is dual mesh coalescer which is manufactured from either metal or plastic filament weave or combining layers of different mesh properties. Liquid droplets directly impinge on the fine wire of the packing surfaces where it allows coalescence to take place. It is usually used in cleaning service for polishing applications.
